I have actual new words! Whole paragraphs of them! Separating the threads of events was the right way to go. I'll write this bit through then write what's going on in the next room then figure out which bits of what's going on in the next room the folks in my main narrative can hear. It'll work.
I'm more likely to find myself inspired to fic by a bad story, one in which I can see unrealized potential. Those sometimes prompt me to think 'If I were writing about that theme, how would I approach it?' or 'If I were writing those characters doing something like that, what would the repercussions be?' Good fics tend to satisfy me, assuming they're complete, or to intimidate me, assuming they're not. The impulse to fic the fic gets squashed under a certainty that I couldn't pull it off.

Same for me. I've written remix-fic before, which is sort of the author-sanctioned version of the idea, but I've never had the opportunity to remix a bad fic in the hope of making it better.
I suppose it's why I can enjoy writing anon-fic on a kink meme or the like. Even if you're the second or third filler, it's okay to take the same idea and give it a different spin. No real repercussions there, unless you decide to de-anon and someone gets huffy about it.
Remixing is a lot of fun. I haven't ever remixed a bad fic, either (though a few times I've remixed drabbles. That's a different sort of challenge). Most of the time, when I want to fic a bad fic, I don't so much want to remix it as to play with the tropes
I do like seeing what a lot of different writers do with the same starting idea. I once thought about starting a community for that sort of challenge-- a prompt or theme every so often that all participants can write in the fandom of their choice. I never did it because I write so slowly and because I don't have the spoons to make it happen.
I'm sitting here thinking about writing while I watch baseball and surf the net. Distracted? Who, me? ;-) I do have Jarte open and a document waiting for me to write something in it, but as yet, I haven't managed anything. The game is interesting, though!
I added a small fill-in-the-gaps scene to DFITM yesterday and I also outlined a prompt fic for a show I barely watch but the idea won't budge ;) Today I copied a couple of challenge prompts over to my ao3, hopefully I'll be able to get the pain to ease a wee bit and get some writing in tonight.
I plotted how to kill all my favorite characters. And wrote a little. Mostly I stayed up until 4 AM plotting and giggling and brainstorming ideas about my massive grimdark Bionicle/Hero Factory crossover. And ambushing the people I know are Bionicle fans and asking them who their favorite surviving characters are so I know who to kill in the most heartbreaking manner.
I think I need to go see if there are any other running gags I can milk for drama... and maybe focus on the fleeting happy bits. Maybe.
