Discussion Topic!!

How do you construct short fiction, especially those with hard word counts like for Picfor1000 (must be exactly 1000 words) or in true drabbles (exactly 100 words), where every word counts? Do you have your theme/idea and stick close to it so that every word brings it together or do you do something else?

764 words so far on Chapter 2 of the Tacky Takua Chronicles, oh yeah!! Also some editing done, and some absolute tons of messing around on BZPower which is why I've only written 764 words interactive research and speculation for a different WIP. (Make that a few different WIPs now, because anything that features Spherus Magna natives is affected by my personal canon of their anatomy.)

I pound out the idea however it comes to me and then go in with a machete and red pen to rework it until it fits. Editing is my precious in this case, yes, yesss it issss... gollum, gollum. (Er. Yes. Anyway.)

I write a lot of short stuff, and first I have to have the 'feel' that I can fit my idea into the word count. Some ideas are 100 word ideas, some are not. Then I bash it down, usually going slightly over my assigned word count, and then I just play until the right numbers are reached. :-)

I can see that. I often get the "wrong" feel for stories and have something I thought would be a couple thousand words turn into 20k. I need to work on that.

Wrote an entire page for my big fic. Considering I was down with a migraine for the rest of the day, I still feel pretty good about my progress.

How do I do short stories? Not really sure, my ideas usually morph from something small to something with 20+ chapters :D I avoid memes like the plague, I need to take care on my old plot bunnies before I can even think about getting new ones (they creep around and pop up anyway - no need to encourage them).

Definitely great progress! When a migraine is coming for me, I am useless and discombobulated.

I am the same way with my stories morphing into something larger.
