Friday already ....

How are you coming along with your writing?

- Great? - Not at all? - Squeezed a few words in? Made great strides?

Discussion Topic:

Did you ever felt like you have taken on too much with a story idea? That you look at what you wrote or you are about to write something and can't continue because you are afraid you won't do it justice?

If so how do you get over it?

Jumping in!

I've squeezed in maybe 300 words or so on a new fic I shouldn't be working on but I'm writing anyway (because it's there and my Avengers fic is broken or something). But mostly it's editing and staring really really hard at the dialogue to see if they work.

I am almost always overwhelmed with a story idea if ten minutes into brainstorming I figure out that it's going to be novel-length. I really don't do long fanfics because I've tried writing it before and I don't have the endurance for it? So what I do is I try to focus on one good idea from that story and try to develop that as a oneshot just to scratch that itch. If that doesn't work, I outline the hell out of it, save that in the ideas folder and hopefully I could come back to it later if I'm feeling more up to the challenge.

If it's a short wip I'm currently working on that suddenly turned into a mini-word monster/ something stylistically complicated, I guess I cheat a little and look at other fics that have similar themes to mine and see how they worked through scenes I'm having trouble with.

I'm being crushed by real life! Sometime Saturday I'll be free so maybe I'll be able to squeeze some words in then....

I do sometimes, especially with certain scenarios -- like battles. When they come up in the story, they are so important yet so huge, I can't figure out how to write them. Basically I just set it aside for a time and chip away at it privately until I find a a way to write it that makes it more manageable.

I've squeezed in 500 words on a new fic and continue to figure out the world building details.

I do it a lot, as I think big but my writing ability is not up to par. I usually just put these idea aside to see if something grows out of them.

Beta B gave back Chapters 7 and 8 of my Big Bang on Wednesday, so I had been working on editing those past couple of days. Waiting for her to send me the last chapter and then I'll jump onto editing!

Too many times certain story ideas I ended up making it much longer than expected. Also there are a few stories that I got started but then not continue because I don't think it's that well written.

I talked about my plans for the fic last night and got feedback for the characterization, then did some editing. Still not entirely sure this works, but it should be tweakable once the rest is done. For now, I'm banning myself on editing any more of the part in question because I know I tend to get lost in it and then nothing ever gets finished :(

I managed no writing (I come late to these posts, sometimes by a day or two. Sorry about that). I'm trying to figure out what a particular character would actually know and be able to tell my point of view character. That means I'm doing some world building in my head. These details haven't been important before, but now they matter.

When a story seems too big for me, I write fragments of it and put them aside. I want to be sure I can pull off the story before I commit myself to posting it.
