Usually that's mainly because the fandoms are so big and I'm so hopelessly behind on them (for example Naruto, Detective Conan, and Homestuck) so I allow myself to get into the fandoms without interacting too much with the actual series too much (or whenever I can, which isn't often).

For example, I don't think Van Helsing is a good movie - but the ideas it planted into my head. Some amazing stories have been written in that fandom and I hope my own contributes to those fanfics. However, they are also often medicore fanfics for every medicore movie, so I never actualy say that I am a fan for the fanfic - just a fan of some of the fanfics :D

I tend not to write more than a couple of fics for the fandoms I have little to no involvement with unless something from the source hits me and won't get out of my head until it's written.
