Professional writers often get asked where they get their ideas, and provide a whole host of answers from the facetious to the serious. Being a fan writer is, perhaps, a little different from being a pro, but the question stands. When you're writing, where do you get your ideas? Do you fill in the missing pieces of your canon, or do you like to throw interesting crises at the characters to see how they'll react? (Or, if you're like me, do you like to read into the characters' interactions and like to throw them into bed to see what happens next?) Tell us all about it!

Ah, I wrote so much glubbing stuff today I don't even. And. And we just posted it, Riese'n me. In all its "Wait crap our characters are flirting?!" glory, hoorah for collabfics! Also Riese's character could've died and my character was somewhat pissed about this aaaand yeah. It was fun. (And then they started flirting.)

I gap-fill and interesting crisis at the same time when possible. It is so wonderful. :D

Yesterday I did some research and also chatted to my cousin on facebook because she had a experience similar to what I'm considering using in a fic.

It varies. Sometimes it's a case of filling in the blanks, other times it's putting characters through the ringer and of course there's the odd moments of they are obviously sleeping together and having that happen.

I haven't been writing, things keep intervening. However, today I spent some time making sure my story files are duplicated on my portable flash drive, because I intend to work on some writing projects while I am at work for a few hours today. So I'm counting that as something writing related. ;-)

Most of my writing involves filling in missing pieces of canon, so ideas stem from that. I try to look at canon from a different point of view and include events that could have happened or that weren't touched on fully. One of my WIPs is AU in that a character who is dead in canon is alive in my story and inserted back into the action; imagining how his presence affects the story gives me lots of ideas without a lot of effort! I also tend to get a number of ideas from pictures or sermons or reading I'm doing; each of these things can trigger an idea based on a character trait of one of the characters I'm working with, or a visualization of a scene I'm trying to create.
