What have you been doing today? Writing, plotting, research, or something else?
Discussion: Speaking of research... when writing for a fandom set in the real world, are you more concerned about realism or canon compliance? That is, if you know that canon has made mistakes with science, police procedures, foreign cultures or whatever, would you rather keep these errors or try to do better in your fics?

A good portion of the time, I don't know the realism stuff, so I stick with canon. Research can only get you so far, it can't help you if you haven't been to an actual location, or know a language, etc.

Date: Wednesday, October 17th, 2012 02:19 (UTC)Realism is sometimes necessary to make sense of contradictions in the canon - but I mostly try to stick to canon. For example: History is clearly different from the movie canon and I write about the characters and events from the movie, so I let history be history and concentrate on the movie.

For example, if I were to write a fic about Sharpe, set immediately after the novel Sharpe's Company, I would have to stick with canon because the author fudged history to make his canon work.

Date: Wednesday, October 17th, 2012 02:22 (UTC)I write for TS which is notably not reality compliant in a lot of areas. I try to tone down the worst 'OMG the world doesn't work that way' but sometimes you just can't because something is an important canon point. I also write a lot of AUs, where I can arrange reality to my own exacting :-) specifications.
