What have you been doing today? Writing, plotting, research, or something else?

Discussion: Speaking of research... when writing for a fandom set in the real world, are you more concerned about realism or canon compliance? That is, if you know that canon has made mistakes with science, police procedures, foreign cultures or whatever, would you rather keep these errors or try to do better in your fics?

I have been organizing my space and catching up on stuff, in preparation for having an appropriate writing space for tomorrow night! (This was really not procrastination. I actually had things that had to be taken care of this evening.)

Realism vs. canon compliance. I try to mesh the two, as much as I can. If not, I suppose I go for what makes a better story. A good portion of the time, I don't know the realism stuff, so I stick with canon. Research can only get you so far, it can't help you if you haven't been to an actual location, or know a language, etc.

Wrote about 600 words for my Patriot fanfic. I am quite happy with that. I also thought about my big story and had a better idea about a certain part of the plot.

Realism is sometimes necessary to make sense of contradictions in the canon - but I mostly try to stick to canon. For example: History is clearly different from the movie canon and I write about the characters and events from the movie, so I let history be history and concentrate on the movie.

I think, if I know canon made a mistake and correcting it in fic won't detract from the story or break canon, too much, I'll correct it.

But writing in any historical fandom, it's a case of 'does it work to be historically correct, or not?' For example, if I were to write a fic about Sharpe, set immediately after the novel Sharpe's Company, I would have to stick with canon because the author fudged history to make his canon work.

I've written a wee bit today and hope to write some more.

I write for TS which is notably not reality compliant in a lot of areas. I try to tone down the worst 'OMG the world doesn't work that way' but sometimes you just can't because something is an important canon point. I also write a lot of AUs, where I can arrange reality to my own exacting :-) specifications.

I wrote a hundred words and added some much needed commas so I'm happy.

I tend to go for a mix in most cases, but most of my fandoms I don't have to worry too much.
