Discussion topic: When a character dies in canon do you have them live on in your fic or do you have the other characters reacting to it?

Earlier this week I visited my granddad's grave for the first time since August 2011 and it was nice because I had a talk to him and I felt a lot better for it a we always talked when he was alive and I cared for him throughout his illness. When he died in 2008, it hit me a lot harder than everyone else in the family because we had grown very close. It took me a long time to get to the cemetery and have my time with him as I live in North East Scotland and I don't come "home" to West Yorkshire very often.

I promise the rest of the week is less depressing.

I'm actually in the midst of weekly and seasonal chores, and I've gotten stuff done in that direction, so I'm feeling accomplished even though I've done no writing. I am waiting for a replacement copy of the canon I want to fic, so I'd probably not be writing anyway.

As to the discussion question-- It really depends. I'd probably change matters some of the time and go to AUs where the death didn't happen, but other times, I'd go with canon and see where it led. Admittedly, what I've tended to do in my primary fandom is to stick to the era when none of the things I'd want to change have yet happened. I came to the fandom before that stuff came out and lived through the era of strong denial of events as it gradually eased into acceptance.

Today wasn't really going to be a writing day anyway, so I don't feel too bad about it. I did other satisfying things that made it a good day. I expect I won't get any writing done for the next day or two, but then the deadline will be upon me so I'll be scrambling to make some progress!

My whole reason for writing is to deal with the death of a canon character by keeping him from dying! ;-)

*hugs* I have also been very close with my grandfather, sometimes I talk to him too. It helps me to remember all the kind words of encouragement he always had for me, when others would just discourage me.

Have not written anything - but since I got a friend staying over xmas it is not that bad or unexpected.

I am with [personal profile] the_rck, it all depends. If I want to write about the character who died, in a way that needs him alive, I go AU/AR or whatever label you use for that. Sometimes it is anyway not clear if a character died (the Marquis de Sade in Waxworks), sometimes they can be resurrected (Dracula from Van Helsing, Kronos from Highlander). Then of course if the character is not necessary to my story I deal with the death as needed. And sometimes I kill of characters and then write about how that affects everyone.

Depends on the story I want to tell. Right now I'm working on something that was an AU from the start. Not only would the character logically not die in this AU, but I found a whole new interesting role for him/her. Other times, if the dead character is not much involved with my intended story, I let the death stand as in canon.

Wrote a little here and there in between last minute Christmas prep.

What I do when a character dies depends on the story I want to tell. Sometimes I keep them dead because I want to start at a certain point in canon. Other times I bring them back because I think they'll help the story.
