It's the middle of the week. There's still time to work on those goals, but we've also had time to see the shape the week is taking. How's everything coming along?
Today's discussion question: Do you write original fiction? If so, what differences do you find between original fiction and fan fiction?
I haven't written original fiction in about ten years, but I think it is different. As an example, with fan fiction, I can generally get away with not describing what the characters look like (though I'm working on a fic right now where I need to describe a canonical character who has no physical description in canon for me to lean on). I can also get away with sketching in only the bits of the setting that are relavent to what I'm writing. I don't think fan fiction writing is easier than writing original fiction. I think it exercises some different skills, in different ways.

Date: Thursday, April 11th, 2013 15:03 (UTC)I remember writing an original mystery story when I was in high school, though I no longer have a copy of it. Since then, however, I have not ventured into original fic. I have thought about trying my hand at it again a time or two, but staying with fan fiction where I don't have to do any world-building is what fits my writing needs at the moment.
