Today's discussion question: Do you ever run into times when you know the story requires that something happen but you can't make it make sense with the characters? Which wins, the plot or the characters?
I've mainly run into this with my big WIP. There are things that I planned to have happen that the characters won't now allow. I've been following the characters because this is more about how they develop and change than it is about a sequence of events. I have other stories in my head where the events matter more, and I have to figure out how to make those events plausible given the characters. I'm not sure how well I'll pull it off. I suppose I'll see.

Date: Saturday, April 13th, 2013 02:39 (UTC)Discussion: I've had this happen, especially with my biggest WIP, that is following a canonical timeline yet is also AU. I tried to be strict with my planned events at first, but the more the characters grew, the more they demanded things go their own way. So now the characters usually win out. Even so, the sequence of events is quite important, so they can't have everything they want! ;-)
I have finally written at least something :)
Date: Saturday, April 13th, 2013 13:28 (UTC)I am planning to get a bunch of writing done today. I am FAR behind on a couple of competitions/nanowrite-style and I want to make at least a good impression. That means writing and revising and outlining and editing like a house afire today and tomorrow (grin). So hopefully I will have good results to report soon.
