IRC Changes Coming

According to posts in the Yuletide community, irc.sff.net is going away forever on June 15th. Do we have a backup for #writethisfanfic? I'm largely ignorant of irc and such, so I have no ideas, but this seems to be something that needs investigating and discussion. I know I use #writethisfanfic and would like it to continue somewhere.

Are those places I could go with just my webbrowser, or do I need to use irc specific software or some other specific software? (I'm only marginally computer literate. I'm 46 and haven't needed to know these things before.) I wouldn't mind more places to hang out, particularly if writing sprints are possible.

It's web based ... you might want to register for a profile but I do think you can jump in without ...

I think the only real back up we had was a chat room on AIM. Several places have talked about moving to www.slashnet.org.

I don't have any better knowledge of irc myself so someone else would have to register the channel and whatnot.

www.slashnet.org sounds like the best option. I have no idea how to find someone with the know how to register the channel, however. I suppose I could try going there and seeing if they have some sort of walk through for how it works. My computer literacy is limited, and I always get nervous venturing into new areas.

They do have what looks like a pretty helpful help section with a how to register a channel section, but I have only used irc once or twice before so I'd need to have the brain space (probably at the weekend) to properly work my way through them. I'm willing to have a go if you would rather.
