Discussion: reviewer asks “will there be a sequel?” when you write a one-shot how do you respond when a reviewer asks that question?

I recently received a couple of reviews for one of my ST: Voy fics and I clearly stated in my headers/notes that it was one-shot, so when a review asked if there'd be a sequel I felt a little sad when I read the notifying email because I have no intention of continuing with that particular fic. I haven't yet had a chance to reply to them but I will be doing.

I've never had that question (maybe it's because I don't post at FF.net?), but if I feel the story won't have a sequel, I'm not going to write a sequel.

I feel like thinking my stories will have sequels gets me in a lot of trouble. I'll either half-ass the series or end up not writing sequels to fics I intended to write sequels to.

I did get inquiries after sequels. Since I mostly write shorter fic which tends to end on a twist or turning point, I get where people are coming from, though what people expect from a sequel doesn't always make for good storytelling, or at least it's not what interests me. *shrugs*. If it fits the comment and I know I won't be writing one myself, I encourage people to write their own sequel, but so far no-one ever did. I'd be floored if that actually happened.

Wrote 500 words today. Still pretty excited about my fic. \o/
