WIP Challenge Check-in, Day 17 -- Thursday

Hello on Thursday!  Sorry about missing yesterday -- the day got away from me and by the time I remembered I hadn't posted as yet, my opportunity was essentially gone!

What kind of a writing day has it been today for you -- or if you haven't begun yet, what do you hope for today?

For Discussion: Have you ever written about a culture or used a vernacular not your own in your fic?  How difficult is it to make it accurate, and how do you go about checking accuracy if that is a goal?

I am thinking about my fic -- not just in the sense that I'm thinking of writing and wondering if I'll have time, but I'm mulling over a couple of plot ideas in my head and letting the "sense" of the story settle before I attempt to write. I may not get a chance to do much more than that until the weekend, but we'll see!

One of my fics features a people group that is not the same culture or main language of the rest of my characters. It takes a lot of extra research to make sure what I am writing fits, because I want to be accurate, even when in one sense it's really all just "made up." I base my culture on one that really exists with which I am familiar and even know some of the language, so that helps a lot with accuracy and reduces the load of research, but it still takes extra work to be consistent. It's worth it, though, if I can make a different culture come alive in a story!

I've had a lot of life things to contend with so far today and I'm about to settle down for a while and hopefully start work on at least one of my in-progress fics.

I finished my spook_me story. I'm trying to get started with femslashex, but I'll leave that factoid there.

The biggest challenge I've had is incorporating Indian mythology in a fic--Indian mythology is something I'm still not familiar with. Even if I checked the internet a lot while I was writing the story, I wouldn't try including Indian mythology in a fic again unless I was well versed in it. I don't want to come across as ignorant or disrespectful.

No writing of my own yet today (though I hope to remedy that in the 1.5 hours before class), but I did finally finish beta reading something I've owed someone for several weeks, and that felt pretty good.

I've thought about my fic a few times as I've rushed around, working on other things. Thursdays aren't good days for writing, not for me, and this week has been difficult in general because I'm not getting time to myself.

I write in an anime/manga fandom primarily, so writing about a culture not my own is a constant concern. I know so little that I'm sure I make errors all the time. Google helps when I have a definite question, but it can't help when I make assumptions that I shouldn't. I mostly get around it by transplanting everybody to a completely alien setting or by really limiting the scope of what I'm writing. If everything happens in one house, the mistakes I can make are more limited.
