Do you write original fiction? If so, what do you find different about original fiction versus fan fiction?

I haven't written original fiction in a bit more than a decade. As long as I'm writing fan fiction, my family can't nag me to try to sell it (the idea of filing off serial numbers hasn't occurred to them). I want my writing to remain a hobby.

As to the differences, in fan fiction, I can get away with not describing what my characters look like. I can't so much in original fiction (I generally forget the description the first time through). In fan fiction, there's a continuity that I have to work with and can't readily change, AUs aside. In original fiction, the author creates the continuity and can alter it as needed. Fan fiction has a ready made audience, I find. For the stuff I write, that audience tends not to be very large, but I suspect that there're more people reading my fic than there would be people reading my original writing (if I did any).

I'm planning at the moment, trying to lay out an outline or two for possible writing later. I'm not feeling very focused at the moment, unfortunately!

I believe I wrote an original story back in middle school -- a mystery that was pretty good until I got to the end and realized I didn't know how to finish it. :-/ I definitely prefer writing as a hobby, and fan fiction is just the thing for that. All the reasons listed above are the same for me, too!

I finally finished my editing and posted earlier.

I have attempted original fiction twice and given up fairly quickly both times because I'm just not that invested in it. I write for fun and my own entertainment and it's why I prefer writing fan fic because I already know the characters and canon, and from there I can interpret it however I want to.

I ended up working on [community profile] femslashex and a bit of my Yuletide story because I am THAT EXCITED to work on it.

I've written original fiction. In fact, I've got a piece that's going to be up for [community profile] polybigbang soon. Original fiction requires you to come up with your own characters, so I find keeping your own characters consistent a bit harder than someone else's characters.

Got a bit further with my Yuletide fic and also posted a ficlet that has been lying around for a while and which I finally polished.

I'm not interested in writing original fiction. The reason I write is that I want to see something specific from canon or canon characters that no-one has else written yet.
