How do you like to develop characters? Do you put a lot of time into figuring out details about them that won't appear in the story or do you wait until you need to know something before you decide it?
I tend to be middle of the road. I decide some things about characters ahead of time and discover other things as I write. I tend, too, to vary the details of what I make up about the background and such of canonical characters. What's true in one story may not be true in another. As long as it fits with canon, it works for me.

Date: Tuesday, October 22nd, 2013 16:08 (UTC)I adore developing characters! Usually I decide on a gender and pick a name then allow that to steer the rest of the character development for me. I like having an age and nationality selected before writing, along with a very brief description of the character's personality (usually no more than two or three sentences long). Afterward, I jump into writing and make up the rest as I go/where I need it.
If I ever get stuck on something like how the character would react to a situation, I go back to the brief description of the character and add to it to maybe help me get an idea. It usually helps.
