So sorry for missing the last couple of days, I have no idea where my head has been at.

How has your writing been for the last couple of days?

Today's discussion topic: Do you like to write AU's, whether a big variation or not? Is there a particular reason you don/don't?

I write a lot of Weiss Kreuz AUs simply because I don't write a lot of stories that fit into canonical gaps. I almost always end up changing something (many times a big something). When I write The Chronicles of Narnia I don't tend so much toward AUs.

There is one Yuletide story that's an AU simply because I screwed up the canonical time line badly and found that out too late to start the story over.

I got quite a bit of writing done these last couple of days but today has been a total bust due to travelling long distance. Hopefully I can get something done tomorrow when mum and Brian are at work because I'll have the house to myself.

I've not really written an AU but I do occasionally diverge from canon to fit an idea that won't work within the established timeline.

I don't really like to write complete AU's, though I've done it a couple of times when I've written for challenges where the prompt calls for it. Recently I had to write for the prompt 'hooker au' for one challenge and for au-historical for another challenge. They were fun to write, but successfully transplanting characters into a completely different setting while still keeping their core personalities can be really tough.

I've written plenty of stories that diverge from canon, rather than being AU. Where somewhere in the middle of the canon timeline of events one character decides to go left instead of right and how events unfold differently because of that alternate choice.

Writing is a bit like pulling teeth at the moment.

Most of the time, I only like those AUs where there are just small changes, to explore "what if"s, to make and idea work, or to fit additional scenes into the canon timeline. I've written a couple of those. My current crossover has some of that as well because there's a bit of cheating/handwaving necessary to bring the two groups of characters together. Complete AUs normally leave me cold.
