Do you like to do challenges and exchanges? Why or why not? How do you decide which ones to do?

I like exchanges. Creating something just for a specific other person seems to get me going as a writer. I'm not so big on most other types of challenges. I have trouble meeting deadlines for those, so I don't do them. Interestingly, I've never missed a deadline for an exchange. I'm not sure what the difference is.

When I try to decide which exchanges to do, I consider whether or not I can come up with things to request. I find that harder than coming up with things to offer. I consider, too, how likely there are to be things I can write well (I once matched on a request that I couldn't do without help and had to recruit a friend to help me write the story). Sometimes, there's more than one exchange at a time that I want to do. I don't write fast enough to do more than one at a time, however, so I have to choose. Those times are always hard.

I've done very little writing or anything related to it recently, due to being too busy and also unwell. I need to get a move on, though, because I only have this month left to work on my Yulefic exchange story, and I'm still only in the research phase of that one.

I like both exchanges and challenges. I really enjoy writing for someone else, especially when there is a deadline. ;-) I have been fortunate to have been involved in a couple of exchanges where I've had good prompts and a person to write for who is very clear in what they like and what they want.

I sign up for a challenge if the prompt is appealing right off the bat, or if it seems like something I can do -- I'm usually got one in the works every month. I will sometimes sign up even if I know I won't be able to make the deadline, if a story idea comes with it that can't be ignored. Most of the challenges I sign up for are in a community that doesn't mind if your story is late.
