Discussion: inspired by real events. Do you ever use things from your own life in fic? Does it depend on what your writing?

I was doing some work on the post-series Taggart fic I'm writing for [community profile] kidficstory big bang today, and one part of an outlined scene takes place at a football (soccer) match, and it was inspired by something my mum did at this years Wembley Weekend.

At Wembley, we were sitting a few rows behind two women who had an umbrella up during the match and it was obstructing ours and others view of the game. After the women had been asked by others to take the umbrella down and hadn’t, my mum started shouting at them calling them ignorant and disgraceful before carefully adding “we paid to watch the rugby not your umbrella.”

I hadn't actually considered or even planned on using this particular event for anything because it wasn't something that I thought could be used for any of my creative work, however, it will be fun to work with, especially deciding which character will be shouting at the people obstructing Lucas's (my child oc) view.

I can't recall basing anything in my fics on events that have happened in my own life. Occassionally I'll use something I've read about on the news or in other places (such as medical books, etc.,), not put any thing that's happened to me in an actual story. There have been times where my feelings about certain situations have definitely influenced writing certain scenes. There's a scene in a chapter of a story, written out a few years ago, that for various reasons remains unfinished, where my feelings at the time over losing a job clearly carried over into the writing of that particular scene.

So yeah, while I've never used actual events from my life into my writing, I've certainly be influenced by them, so far as feelings carrying over into them.

There's a scene in one of my fics where the main character is at a dance club, gets dizzy and passes out, and then her friends help revive her. I felt confident writing that from the character's perspective by recalling the time I was donating blood and passed out on the table, and what the nurses did to help me. Rather proud of how that scene came out.
