Hey everyone, [personal profile] lilly_c with you for the daily check in this week. As we’re heading towards the end of the year, I thought that we’d spend the first part of the week reflecting on 2013 and then spending the second part of the week looking forward to 2014.

How is today going for you?

Discussion: your favourite fic. Thinking about the fics you've written and posted this year are there any that you are particularly pleased with. Do you have a personal favourite(s)? What do you like about it?

This year I’ve written and posted more than I have for a long time and my own personal favourite is Twice Unjust because I have had the idea of Robbie's estranged father being a murder victim for a long time and I finally found a way to use it after re-reading Nietzsche and watching various Taggart episodes one weekend and I hit the ground running with it and had nearly all of it outlined within a week, from that outline I took my time to get everything right with it been my first case based fic. I like that I gave the newer fandom characters fairly large roles, the same with my original characters and I kept it within canon as much as I could with the post-series time line and that I took my time getting Robbie and Jackie together so that their evolution from friends to lovers felt natural rather than forced.

I've written something almost every month this year, but I found myself reworking some old pieces into something new more often than not, due to time constraints. It worked for getting pieces done for challenges, but it wasn't as satisfying as writing from scratch. It has been a difficult year for breaking from from Real Life, and my writing has suffered for it.

Even so, I wrote and posted two short pieces earlier in the year that I was very pleased with. One was called Astray on the Road to Bag End, which was a gapfiller for a situation referred to in the film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I enjoyed writing it because it involved a character I had never written before, which was stretching but fun, and also because it ended up being pretty humorous, which I enjoyed writing (and reading).

The second piece was one called The Wrong Room, in the Lord of the Rings fandom. It was an AU story which involved characters I am very used to writing, placed in an unexpected situation. It was fun making what looked like a scene from canon turn into something new with lots of interesting implications. I even had requests for a sequel after that one. Not sure if it will ever come to that, but the idea of writing more of that AU story is appealing!

I don't know why it took me this long to say anything, but my favorite fic I've written this year is Come On My Teselecta. It's an episode AU with a character that was killed off in an earlier episode as the Doctor's companion, and it was fun to play around with a Moffat script and try to have it make a bit more sense.

I took a break from writing over the holidays, but now I'm back with renewed energy, yay! Got my crossover back from my alpha reader and started editing right away.

I am not a very prolific writer, but out of the four fics I posted this year, I'd pick Blind Date as my favourite. It was the first fic anyone had ever written for the fandom, and in places I struggled to transfer some of the visual humour and the pace of the show into words, but in the end, I think it came out very well.
