Discussion: least favourite fic. Again, thinking about the fic you've written and posted this year, are there any that didn't quite work as you'd imagined them to. What is your own least favourite fic?

I have a few fics that are disappointing and the two that I’m going to say are my least favourites are Something That I Want, which was intended as a very shippy Janeway/Chakotay one-shot set post Cathexis it became very awkward and was around 350 words when I eventually finished it. It was also a prompt fill that I haven't yet gone back to revise and fix up. One day I may get around to writing the revised version.

The other that I find disappointing is Consoled By Pity, a 500+ word ficlet which is a five more minutes extension to the final scene of Grass, a Taggart ep, after Robbie tells Jackie “You don't believe that and neither do I.” Although it deals with several key events in the episode, I feel that there is a little something lacking from the R/J dynamic that although I can't quite put my finger on what would improve it.

I don't think I've got any fics that I'd consider to be awful failures. I do want to go back and re-write the first chapter of Divided we Fall, United we Stand, my multi-chapter Hornblower fic. I tell way more than show, mostly because I was retelling the story of one of the TV episodes from a different perspective and hadn't got into the swing of things.

Least favorite? I have to say an exchange fic. I don't think I'm at liberty to discuss details in namespace yet.

I've written about 800 words on the Yulefic that's due tomorrow, so that calls for a "Yay!". I need to get the word count to at least 1K. It's been an unexpectedly hard one to write, but I think I know how to finish it up now, so that's my goal for the rest of the day.

I don't really have a least favorite fic, though the one I am currently working on could be put in the category of fics I am not entirely happy with. I like it, but it's not got the depth I was hoping for when I started writing it. Hopefully that will change before I'm finished with it! I do have an old fic I am reworking a bit because of some glaring (to me) errors, but in spite of those errors, I've always been very happy with it.

For this year's output, the fic I'm least pleased with is the one I worked longest on. I suppose that's not surprising. Interrupted writing leads to interrupted train of thought. The theme isn't as cohesive as it ought to be, it's rambley... Maybe I was trying to force a story that didn't quite fit. After all hurt/comfort is not exactly my forte, and the character I chose for POV doesn't really fit the story, either.

On a milder note, I just found a large number of typos in a chapter I posted to Tumblr. Fortunately, I'm in the process of editing the same story for AO3.

I like all the fics I wrote this year. With the exception of Yuletide, though, I don't write for deadlines, so I usually only post what I'm happy with.
