They say, "Write what you know." Do you draw on your own experiences when you write?

I tend to write science fiction and fantasy fandoms, so a lot of it is stuff that has little to do with my own experiences. I like to think, though, that my characterization comes from an understanding of and experience with real people.

I've been going over my beta's edits for my big bang and making those changes. Now, I'm about to have a break from that and start getting a timeline together for a post-canon story and I have three episodes to rewatch.

I mainly write crime fandoms that are character driven, so I do sometimes draw on my experiences if I need something for a scene that I can't use actual canon for.

I find that surprisingly much of my experience is relevant to my writing, given that the kind of SFF I consume overwhelmingly strives for political allegory or comment. If canon draws blatant comparisons between a mundane phenomenon and a fantastical one, I feel pretty free to do the same, sometimes to a greater extent.

Due to RL stuff I have no yet written this week. I put down a lot of words last week, though, so I have plenty of editing ahead of me.
