Hi! I'll be posting check-ins all week. Due to time zones, my posts might come up at unexpected times. I will however try to post early enough that most people have a chance to check in on the same calendar day.
How did your writing fare today? Did you...
Daily discussion question: Speaking of refreshing canon, how often do you find yourself needing a refresher? Do you opt to reread/rewatch/replay the complete work, or do you look for specific bits of canon from external sources, like YouTube videos or fandom wikis?
I find fandom wikis invaluable, both as a reader and as a contributor. While I enjoy rereading favorite books, or marathoning TV shows on lazy Saturday afternoons, when I'm on the spot and I need that one detail for the devil to go into I will rely on the collective wisdom of the fan community. Since I got into a video game fandom, videos have occupied a similar place of honor. I use them less often, but when I need them nothing else will do.

Date: Sunday, February 9th, 2014 18:39 (UTC)I usually consume the canon first. Then I rely on wikis and scripts for canon review for fics first, followed by transcripts and then the actual media if I can't find a good transcript. I try not to rewatch whole episodes if I have to go back and watch part of a TV series.

Date: Sunday, February 9th, 2014 23:31 (UTC)For much of what I write, I only need reminders of a specific nature, so I can usually go right to it in canon. For more general work, I rely on wikis and fandom-related encyclopedias, many of which are very thorough and give me exactly what I need. Videos are usually the last thing I look at -- except for the one story I am writing that is anime-based; that one requires watching whole episodes sometimes. Which is dangerous, because I am easily drawn in to watching the videos all day/all night and forget about the writing!
