Discussion: lack of 'shipper fics (c/o the flamingo).

Picture of a flamingo's head on pink background with the text Notice that lots of people ship your favourite pairing, yet there's not a fic in sight

Do you ever find yourself wanting to read a specific pairing in fic, only find that there is none? Do you write some so that others have something to read?

Most of my fandoms are tiny and often "of one" so I find that I have to write fic for specific pairings because there would be none if I didn't.

Right now? No. But when I was more into Torchwood fandom, I wrote a lot of femslash pairings because there really isn't a lot of femslash. Most of the fic is slash, and most of the slash is Jack/Ianto.

Then again, come to think of it, I should write more Donna/Rachel for Suits fandom, since there are detailed rec lists with all sorts of tropey fics and various AUs for Mike/Harvey. Meanwhile, for Donna and Rachel (let alone Rachel, who's often treated as asexual in fic when she's clearly sexual in canon)...crickets.

Many of the projects I take on fit that definition, and even more of the projects I reject. The problem is, I can't write nearly as much as I'd like to read. And, of course, there are a lot of types of stories that I love reading but can't write to save my life. Most plot-driven stories, for example, especially things like murder mysteries.

This happens to me all the time! But I tend to gravitate toward minor or rare ships (and canons, for that matter), and often find myself in fandoms of one.

In my main fandom lots of people ship my favorite het pairing, but they almost never write about those characters (and if they do, it's a secondary or tertiary storyline in a fic for the fandom's major pairing). It makes me sad when I go to look for new fic and there hardly ever is anything. And I'm pretty much the only person that ships any of my favorite femslash pairings in that fandom... Sigh.
