Discussion: Author's note 'sorry it's so long'. When you write a long fic do you ever apologise for the final word count?



To me what the overall length of a fic is, is a personal thing and everyone has their own definition of what that is and to some authors 500 words is long, to others it isn't.

I have never used that apology or any variation of it because I find that the overall length of a fic is down to the original idea and also what I consider to be a natural point to wrap it up. I do have a few fics that are 10,000 words and longer because that's what was needed for those stories and most of mine are anything from 100 words to 4000 words.

I never apologize for length. The longest thing I've written is not even novel-length, even.

Are you kidding me? When I write anything over 5,000 words, I'm like, " 8D Look how long it is!!!!!" xD The few things I've written 10,000 words, I've basically left internet high fives in the A/N section. xDD

I have, though, apologized for writing long A/Ns which I don't do anymore, unless there's something relevant I have to explain and even that has only happened once in the last 2 or 3 years. ^^;

I never apologize for the final word count.

However, sometimes if the latest chapter in a multi-chapter fic is a long one I will indicate in the author's note that there's a long chapter ahead. It's not really an actual apology, more of a heads up.
