Discussion: using tags on AO3. When you post a new fic to AO3 do you find it easy or difficult to tag? Does it depend on the fic?

Picture of a flamingo's head on a pink background with the white text Tagging on AO3, it's even worse than writing summaries

I actually find the tagging quite difficult on AO3 because there are just so many of them and these days most don't apply to what I write and I have to spend ages finding the ones that appropriate for gen and shippy gen fics.

Uh, I wrangle tags and I've always found it very easy to tag my fic on AO3, so I am wondering what people find difficult about it and what is it that takes you so long, as you say? Not a "you're doing it wrong" at all but genuine honest curiosity.

I struggle with tagging... not so much characters, relationships, and so on, but mostly with AO3's additional tags. It's hard sometimes, when anything goes, to decide which aspects of a story you want to tag for. All of them? Only the most important ones (and on that note, does that mean the ones I think are important, or the ones I think my readers are likely to view as important?)? Do I want to use canonical tags, or just type whatever thoughts come into my head and call that good enough? And so on. And of course sometimes I just can't think of the right word(s) for what I want to say in my tag, or nothing helpful comes up in the autofill, and it's just a frustrating mess.

Okay, I see. Personally, for freeforms I tend to use canonical tags for the most part out of pragmatic considerations - my philosophy being that ultimately people use tags to find fic that suits their preferences/mood and in most communities/fandoms I'm in, I assume people use either the character/pairing tags or a specific kink or AU/trope tag to find what they want to read. So if a fic falls into one or more categories like that which are tag-able (like, say, deathfic or Hogwarts AU) those are the ones I tend to put on and anything else goes in the summary or notes.

I try to tag with what the fic's about. I try to use established tags over making new tags up, but if I have to makes a new tag, I shrug and make it.

I love AO3 tags and tagging! I've always tended to tag my fics with everything I felt needed to be known (genre, warnings, contains, etc) long before AO3 and now I do it even better thanks to AO3. xD I'm also horribly addicted to making up silly tags for my sillier/longer Homestuck fics.

UGH, this is not going to be a good writing day for me. *sighs*

With tags on AO3, I usually just try to tag just what I need to say what the fic is about and any possible warnings/characters/info that are not apart of AO3 archive warnings and the like. And I try not to go overboard and post a wall of tags either.
