For discussion, let's talk about ideas. Where do you get your plot ideas from? Do you prefer to fill in the missing moments from your canon, or would you rather write AUs that amend elements of the canon (or perhaps do away with the canon setting altogether)? Do you seek out prompts or challenges, or solicit prompt ideas from your friends? Do your ideas arrive from the ether, like the inspiration particles that ping through the Discworld atmosphere? Or do they come from somewhere else?

I write best from prompts, even vague prompts (such as just fandom and characters). I need a deadline, too, so I tend to do exchanges. I'm not so good at the sort of thing where one claims prompts. Finishing those doesn't feel as urgent, so I tend not to.

I do sometimes have ideas that come from less formal prompts. Those can come from thoughts on canon, reactions to another fic, conversations with friends, that sort of thing.

I tend to write divergent AUs, the kind where I change one or two things and go from there, but I've written other sorts of things, missing scenes and sequels.
