Discussion: character bashing. Have ever bashed a character that you don't like? Is it something you'd rather avoid?

I tend not to bash any characters in my fics because I find it to be petty and alienating when I read it in other people's fics. I avoid it as much as I can.

I avoid it at all costs. Character bashing is something that I personally find annoying when reading, so avoiding it is always at the top of my mind when I have to write about characters that I dislike. It can be difficult though, finding the line between being "in character" and the area where it crosses over to bashing (especially if the character has an unpleasant personality to begin with).

I should probably add that I generally avoid writing the character at all if I can help it, though once or twice, I've purposely tried writing about the character... and unexpectedly ended up in a neutral state with the character, like we have come to a peaceful understanding of some sort after I was done. It was kind of interesting.

I try not to bash characters, but my main fandom, Weiss Kreuz, has some popular characters who are decidedly nasty (and the 'heroes' are vigilante assassins, so they're not paragons of virtue either), and I tend to write them as villains rather than as misunderstood heroes. That doesn't mean they're not interesting characters. I like to think I give them depth.

Character bashing annoys me, so I avoid it myself at all times. I sometimes try to write those bashed characters to show that what they are being bashed for is not the sum total of their character.
