Sorry I missed yesterday's post, work was crazy and I pretty much crashed when I eventually got home.

How have the last couple of days been for you?

Discussion: tricky scenes. When you have a tricky scene to write or edit how do you get passed it? Do you outline it then write? Read it several times then edit? Ask someone for advice? Something else?

I had two scenes like this in a chapter of my current WIP Let Me Fade and for a couple of weeks it was giving me problems every time that I read it until I left it alone to work on another fic and the solution recently came to me when I was out for my early morning run. When I went back to it all that was needed was a change in who said the opening lines of dialogue in that particular chapter and it fixed the problem and made the flow more consistent with the previous chapters.

When I come to a tricky scene, I procrastinate. Then I stall. Then I write something and hate it, sometimes as a series of disconnected bits that I then I have to patchwork together somehow. And then I rewrite it as many times as I have to before I either get sick of it and call it "good enough" or arrive at something I don't feel quite as horrible about. I once rewrote a single chapter to the tune of about 50,000 total words (over the course of 6 individual, complete rewrite attempts). In a month. -headdesk-

physical outlining is difficult for me but I might have a rest and work out the scene on my head. or, I'll work on a different situatiom. I try not to pause the process completely, that way lies fic death.
