Do you like to talk about your stories as you write (or your story ideas as you prepare to write) or does doing that kill the story for you?

I love talking about what I'm working on. I find it helps me clarify what I'm doing and builds my enthusiasm for the project. I particularly like having a first reader, someone to whom I can show snippets as I go along.

I can talk in general terms, and about word counts, but if I talk about specifics it kills the story for me and I lose all enthusiasm.

I sometimes share snippets when the writing sprints I join shares them as a standard procedure, but I am not expecting anything related to story plot or direction, so I don't mind sharing that way.

I think talking about a story helps me work it out or think of other ideas that might work with what I am trying to write. There are a few people who I can talk to about what I'm writing, so when I get the chance, I'll run things by them. It's not necessary to produce a story, but I do think it helps. If I'm having trouble working something out I'll definitely talk about it with someone, because that helps me get past the problem.

When I was on LJ I used to talk about my stories all the time and hardly ever finished or posted anything so nowadays I tend to not talk about my stories too often unless I'm stuck then I'll ask for advice.
