Do you like challenges or exchanges? Why or why not? If you do, how do you decide which ones to do?

I like exchanges better than other types of challenge. The ones where one claims prompts seldom speak to me, and I write so slowly that I'd never dare try a bingo square (it would take me years!). When I do an exchange, somehow, that works for me. I can take the requested characters and details and make a story. It's often something I wouldn't have thought of otherwise. I do most of my writing for exchanges. This year, however, I'm trying to limit the number of exchanges I do so that I can work on a WIP that I've had going for more than a decade.

I generally prefer challenges to exchanges but I'm finding that I'm not too keen on bingos. I had a bad experience with an exchange so I tend to avoid them but I may try it again one day.

I'm also cutting down on challenges this year because I have a lot of unused prompts from all over the place to use up and whatever is left will be going up for another amnesty post towards the end of the year.

I do both and like both, but the prompts are only taken from a community related to my favorite fandom. I usually can think of something for the monthly challenge prompt, and the exchanges are especially fun. I do need to limit myself this year, though, because I find myself doing all my writing for the challenges/exchanges, and my WIPs get neglected.

I'm still working on a kink-bingo card from 2011 - I actually find those open challenges way less stressful than exchanges, which never have a no deadline option.
