WIP Challenge Check-in, Day 25 -- Sunday

Greetings! linaewen here to help encourage you and provide you with a setting to talk about your writing as we enter the final week of our May WIP Challenge.

 

What kind of a writing day has it been today?

For Discussion:  When coming up with a new character for a story, how much time do you put into working out a name?  Is the name an important part of the personality of your character?  Do you use any special website or reference for determining your names?

I can't write a character properly until I have a name, and I spend a fair bit of time researching names and their meanings.  One of my fandoms has extensive canon and I sometimes resort to using a rarely used name from a character who appeared briefly in canon history for an original character.

I haven't been writing lately. I have a challenge story overdue, not to mention several WIPs that are stalled. I have to do a better job of managing my time and making myself make use of writing time when I have it -- which is often enough, I just waste the time doing other things!

Wrote. Will probably have to do a canon review.

I usually get an OC's character from a generator. When it fits my character, I move on with my story.

Writing. Got a decent dent made on a chapter fic. If I can just manage to stay awake for a little longer I can get it finished and ready to edit.

I use name generators. Sometimes I have to run it several times to get something that fits. Once a name is right I can move on.

Today is a day of errands and household chores. I might get to write a bit later on, but I'm not holding my breath.

I like to have a name for a character before I start writing. I've got an excellent book of baby names that gives meanings and lots of variants (The book is called What to Name the Baby. It's by Evelyn Wells. I've got the oldest edition, but Amazon shows a much more recent edition available). I tend to browse through the books and pick out names that sound right for what I'm working on. For the anime/manga fandoms I write in, I have found a decent website for Japanese names, both personal and family.
