Discussion: family. Do your family know that you write fic? Are they supportive? Aren't they bothered?

My family know that I write fic and they mostly just leave me to it so I take it to mean that they're not that bothered but I'm sure that they'd ask me if they were curious. There are times when I'll talk about an idea with my husband, which helps because it tends to shake loose the things I'm not sure about and he sometimes edits my fic for me, again he just leaves me to it because he's not as involved with fandom as I am.

My husband and daughter know I write fic. My husband is supportive and will first read or beta for me when he knows the fandom. My daughter who's eleven is supremely uninterested. She can't imagine why anybody would read or write fic (I've almost got her interested in fic based on The Heroes of Olympus, but she wants to wait until the last book is out first).

I'm not sure that my parents know that I write at all. They don't tend to pay attention to things like that about me. They've certainly never shown any interest in my hobby.

My in-laws know I write and have a very, very vague idea of what fanfic is. They're not particularly interested. It's mainly come up to explain why I take my laptop with me on vacations, and I've only ever mentioned the G rated stuff to them. They're a big reason I use a pseudonym. I don't want them googling and finding my stuff.

My mom knew I was writing; I used to share some of my plans and ideas in general with her, as she was a good listener. She didn't follow the fandom, but she knew I was interested in writing and was always encouraging, even though she never read any of it (that I know of!). My husband knows I write fic, and while he isn't interested in reading any of it, he is fine with me being involved in it -- as long as I don't stay up late too many nights in a row to do writing! He has read a thing or two that I wrote, but fiction of any kind isn't really what he prefers to read. EVen so, he has on occasion participated in writing discussions that I have with my son, because he does have some knowledge of some of the fandoms I'm interested in. My adult son is my main support in my writing of fic. He aspires to be a writer himself, and whenever I need to bounce an idea off someone, he's my go-to person. We love and follow the same fandoms, so he's a real help to me when I need to do some brainstorming or lack confidence with a certain character. I do the same for him with his writing. We edit each others' stuff from time to time.
