Does music help you write? Does it depend on what kind of music?

I like music while I write. I'm better off with something very familiar than I am with something completely new. New music requires more attention and can distract me. Familiar music relaxes me and lets the words flow.

I only had a chance to wrote some notes and do some research yesterday, not sure what will happen today. Perhaps this evening after the day's housework is done I'll have some time to myself for actual writing!

Music does help me focus better, and get real writing done. I can do other things like edit or research without music, but don't seem to be able to write fresh words without it. It can't be music with words, though, it has to be instrumental. I have a playlist of songs that seem to inspire that I play on a loop when I want to concentrate on writing.
