Discussion: flames/trolls/negative feedback. When you get a negative comments on your fic or writing in general, how do you respond to it?

When I was younger, anything negative use to really get to me and I often wanted to give up, thankfully I had an understanding flist who would encourage me and with their advice I continued. These days I tend to ignore negative comments unless it's along the lines of "ugh I hate this" then I'll ask what it is that the commenter doesn't like or agree with. The thing that I do find difficult to deal with is the anon fail/flame memes on Tumblr because I've had friends see things from my fics appear on them and although I don't use that site I can pretty much ignore it, I just find it pretty shitty that the people submitting didn't bother to leave me a comment so I could deal with it.

I had no idea these fail/flame memes existed on Tumblr. But I think it's because Tumblr wasn't designed for fandom spaces. It's just that, when LJ was being run to the ground by clueless Russian staff, a lot of fandom flocked to Tumblr instead of here or anything similar to LJ. And now, if you're looking for fandom-related anything, you have to dig through several tags to find something that you're looking for. And, judging by how small Tumblr-run exchanges are (on Tumblr or a combination of Tumblr and AO3), it's very cliquish. Now I'm thinking some of my stuff may be on those fail/flame memes, and I don't like it.

Speaking of, I've seen negative criticism of my work. Most of it has been either concern trolling (despite the warnings I put on my fic on my journal and on AO3) or people complaining about how my idea of a canon isn't the same as their idea of a canon. Unless it's something actually helpful, like me not doing enough [country]-picking for a canon that's not based in the US, I ignore the criticism.

I've gotten some negative criticism -- not much, but a bit. It used to bother me, but for the most part I can deal with it. It usually has to do with disagreeing over my stance on canon or my interpretation of a character. If I think we can have a reasonable discussion over the situation, I will reply back, otherwise I ignore it. I haven't had an anonymous flamer criticize me as yet, for which I am thankful!
