Do you use outlines? Why or why not? If you do, what kind of outline works best for you?

I tend not to use outlines. I often don't know enough about what's coming next to manage an outline. The closest I come, on long fics, is a list of scenes that I know need to happen somewhere or a lot of world building notes. For short fics, I never outline.

Doing some planning and editing today since I'm home with a bad cold. I may not have enough brain for writing, but I'm going to be adding some notes to my outlines, at least.

I make outlines for everything. For longer fics, they are more detailed; for short fics they are not much more than a list of points I want to cover in roughly the order the events occur. My outlines tend to be chronological and chapter by chapter, divided into main sections usually denoted by a change of scene, under which I list bullet points of events and conversations to take place, appropriate research, questions to be answered or alternate ideas to consider, and quotes from canon that apply. One of my fics is based on an already written-in-canon chronology, so I take that as my base outline and add my own details to it. Other fics are less detailed but I still have a pretty good idea where I want to go with them, even if it's only for the next chapter.

Using an outline helps me organize all the notes and research I have so I don't forget anything I want to include and helps me pick up fairly easily after a long stretch of time of not writing.
