Does music help you write? Do you need silence to write or do you like background noise?

I like having music on when I write, but it works best if it's music I know very, very well, something I can let go by without paying a lot of attention. I've sometimes had luck with having the TV on, but it has to be something I can give only a fraction of my attention. I don't necessarily work well in complete silence, but I have a lot of trouble if there are a lot of distractions (yesterday, there was no school, and I had three kids playing Wii next to me all day. I couldn't focus on what I needed to do).

I seem to write best with music on, but it can't be music with any singing or words, which seems to be distracting -- only instrumental works for me.
