The melodic whistle of a bird grabbed her attention. She jerked her gaze up. Her breath caught. Among the variety of trees, the cone bearers were showing a remarkable transformation. The cones were blooming. White petals pushed out from between the scales. The scales fell away and surrendered to flowers. Long, delicate filaments with blue heads grew out from their hearts, quivering with the pulsing earth.
