OK! I think I have enough of an idea of how to run this thing to get started, at least. If nothing else, perhaps we could think of this first month as the beta test for the WIP challenge.
To recap what I think was general consensus so far:
The WIP-finishing challenge will run in month-long segments; each participant can set their level of commitment for each month (number of words written, chapter finished, fic finished, etc.) as well as their participation.
We'll try assigning buddies in groups of 3 or 4: that way, a buddy doesn't have to be everything (buddy-wise) to the other person, and if someone has to drop out for any reason, it won't leave anyone hanging. Having buddy systems larger than pairs will also leave room for people who want to join in future months.
Signing Up
What I'm thinking is this: signups for next month will be open until October 24, which will leave a week for buddy groups to be assigned, and then we'll start on November 1.
If you'd like to join us, please comment with the below info. Some of the details might not be used to assign buddies (not everyone will find buddies with common fandoms), but this could be a useful place for people to come find out more about their buddies as they are assigned.
Copypaste below:
I will confess I'm still not sure how I will assign buddies yet: flashes of inspiration welcome.
And just because you are assigned to one buddy group, that doesn't mean you can't also talk to one of your friends, or someone else whose fic sounds interesting! The buddy system is the safety net, the bare minimum, of involvement and support and cheerleading. But we're not going to be in silos here.
Please be patient as we go: there are bound to be bumps in the road, and we'll all be figuring out things together. Constructive feedback on how the challenge could be tweaked to run better would be fantastic.
Right! Go forth & sign up then (please!). I'm super excited about getting this going, & that excitement has only been fed by knowing that other people would find this as useful as I would. Positive feedback spiral, hooray!
And spread the word if you know of anyone else who might be interested. Thanks, everyone, for your interest & enthusiasm!

- Level of challenge: 1 chapter, 1000 words, 1 fic finished for the next 3 months or whatever: feel free to commit just to November to start with, though!
- Fandom(s) involved: if you know at this point
- What you're looking for in your buddy group: this could be as vague or specific as you like
- What you could offer buddies yourself: ditto!
- How buddies should contact you: DW message, e-mail (include address), IM etc.

Date: Monday, October 4th, 2010 23:40 (UTC)Fandom(s) involved: I've been writing a Doctor Who / Sarah Jane Adventures crossover for oh, around two years now. I would like to finish it before I die. Not that I expect to die soon, but if I keep writing at this rate, it's going to be a race.
What you're looking for in your buddy group:Cheerleading and friendly "How's it going?" nudges would be great. I think word races would intimidate me, but some scheduled buddy writing time would be awesome.

What you're looking for in your buddy group: Having some sort of group writing exercises would be fun (I saw that others have mentioned word races...stuff like that), it would be helpful to have someone who understands perfectionism...all the better to help move me along.
What you could offer buddies yourself: Cheerleading, writing advice (grammar, syntax). Probably other stuff, too, but I'm not quite sure what to expect.
How buddies should contact you: DW message for now, e-mail, AIM, GChat, Twitter later.

Date: Wednesday, October 20th, 2010 08:46 (UTC)Fandom(s) involved: Final Fantasy VII. I also write for several other video game fandoms - Kingdom Hearts, other FF titles - and a few anime fandoms.
What you're looking for in your buddy group: Prodding, reminders, communication, beta or even just hanging out while writing online. But especially prodding.
What you could offer buddies yourself: I'm willing to poke people, beta or just chat about the process. I am fairly good at spotting spelling mistakes and the like, even if I don't know the fandom.
How buddies should contact you: DW initially, but the best way of getting hold of me on a regular basis is usually email or Yahoo messenger.

What you're looking for in your buddy group: Prodding. I've found word races and scheduled buddy/group writing time/WC (Word Count) session (meet on AIM/MSN etc. at a scheduled time and all write as much as they can for 20-60 minutes then take a break to breath and chat and then maybe do another one in a bit) to work well for me so that's what I'd want most - but time zone differences have made it difficult to participate in other places I've found because active participants were mostly from the US and I live in Finland (my timezone is GMT+2). But I've been able to do it sometimes on weekends even with the US schedules and it was effective :)
