How do you feel about posting a WIP? Have you ever done it? Did it work out for you?

My first fic was (and still is) a WIP. I had nine chapters when I started to post, and I thought I'd be able to keep well ahead and finish quickly. Ha! I'm still working on it fourteen years later. I'm determined not to start posting another WIP until this one is done (and maybe not even then). I don't like having the whole thing hanging over my head. On the other hand, having encouragement from readers has really helped me keep going, so I don't know.

I accidentally posted a WIP. It's a bit of a long story, and it was weird, and I have weird feelings about it (and as a reader I HATE WIPs), but it was definitely interesting. I know why people do it, for sure. And I hate having WIPs out there too, so the next time I decide to do it, it will be with lots of forethought. I actually made a whole post about the process.
