Do you have a fandom you return to over and over again? If so, what about it appeals to you?
I seem to return regularly to Weiss Kreuz and to The Chronicles of Narnia. Somehow, for Weiss Kreuz, in spite of my having to ignore certain inconvenient bits of canon, I feel like I have room to try just about anything. I'm not sure what about the canon and characters has captured my attention so fully, but I can't seem to get away from it (not that I'm trying very hard). I could wish that my passion were for a fandom that's more current and more widely read and written.
The Chronicles of Narnia is sort of an accidental fandom for me. The more I write for it, the easier it gets. There's a lot of space for stories in the interstices of canon. It helps, too, that there are people who will read what I write and comment on it.
I guess I like canons that have plenty of space for me to move around and be creative.
