When you write fanfic, do you try to preserve the tone and style of the canon as you write? Why or why not?

For me, it depends. When I'm writing for something like Yuletide, particularly for a literary fandom, I try to find the voice of canon and carry it forward. Well, I do unless the request is for something that doesn't fit with the canonical voice. I'm less likely to worry about it when I'm writing for a movie or a TV fandom-- There, I want to keep the characters and plots consistent with canon, but I feel that going from a primarily visual medium to text makes imitating the voice nearly impossible.

I write mostly in one fandom, and for me, it is essential to write in the tone and style of canon. I feel the tone adds to the "authenticity" of the story and the characters, so I strive to be as close to the original canon as possible. It takes me out of the story when I read something that is in a different tone, so I want to be sure that what I write doesn't do that.

I generally try to be relatively close to canon when it comes to tone, but it can be a lot of fun to play with it, too. Some of the canons I handle are very silly, but take place in potentially serious settings, so I find it refreshing to drop the silliness for a bit and look at the darker side of things.
