Do you ever run into times when you know the story requires that something happen but you can't make it make sense with the characters? Which wins, the plot or the characters?

For me, it's always the characters. They're at the heart of what I'm writing. The plot is just a vehicle for them to come through clearly and, just maybe, to develop and change. It does make for some scrambling to catch up when the plot deviates from what I had planned, but I can usually roll with it.

Characters over plot for me. In fact, I'm experiencing a situation like this now with one of my WIPs. I just spent several hours (in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep) working up a new idea on how to deal with knotty plot point that is coming up in my outline. I have been fussing with the impending situation for some time, and as I draw closer to writing it, I realize more and more that I am being driven by the plot and the plan and not by the characters, and that needs to change. So an idea occurred to me that fits the characters better, but totally changes the plot I had planned. But I don't mind that! It will be more interesting if this works out, anyway. All the characters involved benefit from the change and I get to explore new territory.

Did a cheeky bit of writing today, but it was mostly just to test an idea that's been circulating in the pool of porn that passes for my brain.

Characters always win for me. The plot exists because they make it happen; if it gets to be the other way around, it means I'm not doing it right (IMO).
