When you sit down to write, how do you get yourself started?

This is a problem for me-- I tend to start up my solitaire game for 'just one game,' and discover, two hours later, that my writing time has evaporated. I'm trying to get myself out of that by just not opening the solitaire game, but the game does help me think through problems I'm having with my story, so... What I really have to do is to reread what I've written so far and try to find the words that come next. I haven't found any short cuts for that.

If I open Solitaire, I'm done for. The best way to get something going is to reread what I have so far, then turn on some instrumental music and start typing. Usually the words start flowing and I make progress.

Solitaire is the bane of my productive time.

I think it helps sometimes to switch writing media - try writing long-hand for a bit. Copy out the last paragraph or so of your fic onto paper and keep writing. Then type it up... and keep writing.

It engages a slightly different part of the brain (apparently) and thus stimulates creativity.

And I really ought to do more of that myself!

Have never found a better method than just starting. Even if it's just a sentence or two, I am further along than I was.
