Date: Tuesday, March 24th, 2015 20:42 (UTC)I tend to play fast and loose with canon in some ways because I really like divergent AUs. A lot of my stories start out with me asking, "What if this was true instead?" That said, for something like Yuletide, I try to be extremely canon compliant because I don't always know what parts of canon my recipient loves. (There are exceptions-- One year I made a major, irreparable error in the canonical time line. I didn't have time to write a new story when my beta reader pointed out my error, so I had to label the dratted thing AU.)

Date: Tuesday, March 24th, 2015 23:14 (UTC)I am very strict about canon. A lot of my research involves checking to see if my ideas fit with canon; if they don't, I change my idea so that it fits. If it doesn't, I can't use it.
