Discussion: How strict are you about canon-compliance in your fanfic? Are you willing to adjust the details to fit your plot?

I seldom do much writing on Tuesdays because I devote several hours to link finding for [community profile] metanews on Tuesdays. I'm also still distracted by the pain from my broken foot/sprained ankle. Maybe this evening there will be writing. Maybe tomorrow there will be writing. I don't know.

I tend to play fast and loose with canon in some ways because I really like divergent AUs. A lot of my stories start out with me asking, "What if this was true instead?" That said, for something like Yuletide, I try to be extremely canon compliant because I don't always know what parts of canon my recipient loves. (There are exceptions-- One year I made a major, irreparable error in the canonical time line. I didn't have time to write a new story when my beta reader pointed out my error, so I had to label the dratted thing AU.)

Wrote. Have a better start on Heroine Big Bang and Shipswap now.

I'm very strict about canon-compliance. If it's not canon-compliant IMO, I won't write it or finish it.

Tuesdays are usually bad writing days for me, though I may get an opportunity this evening to work on some writing projects -- if I can stay awake!

I am very strict about canon. A lot of my research involves checking to see if my ideas fit with canon; if they don't, I change my idea so that it fits. If it doesn't, I can't use it.

I wrote a little and did some more outlining for a later chapter of my WIP.

I'm not all that strict about canon-compliance and I like to try and play around with different possibilities and I do adjust details to fit if I need to.

Being a video game 'ficcer often means a great deal of canon flexibility, so this isn't usually an issue, but there are plenty of times when I like to tweak things, too (or, more often, exploit an unexplained gap and spin it into other changes).
