Date: Thursday, March 26th, 2015 22:44 (UTC)I'm willing to include original characters in stories when they serve a purpose that canonical characters can't. That mostly happens in very long stories, things with a broad scope. I do generally keep the focus on the canonical characters so that the OCs are supporting characters.

Date: Thursday, March 26th, 2015 23:49 (UTC)I include OCs in longer fics, and I find I like to tell a known story from a different perspective, which is very often that of an OC or a minor character. I think a lot of it depends on what the story is - sometimes I want to explore a facet of a known canon character and sometimes I want to show how a canon event appeared to others involved in it. Those fics do tend to be the longer ones, though.

Date: Friday, March 27th, 2015 01:06 (UTC)I make use of OC's in my longer fics, and sometimes those established OC's creep into some of my smaller fics as well. I find them helpful for providing a different POV or as someone the canon main characters can interact with so that their characters are better revealed.
