A lot of us do exchanges and challenges and otherwise write to prompts. If you do that sort of thing, what's your process? How do you go from prompt to story idea?

Generally, for me, this involves a review of canon (or parts of canon) and taking notes. Then I let things stew for a few days if I've got the time. I usually make a couple of false starts as I figure out the point of view character and the starting situation.

When I first see the prompt, I usually get some sort of idea right away, or a couple of ideas -- but they are usually vague and have to be researched to see if they are valid. I review canon and research the various ideas to see if they hold water and are supported by canon and by the characters. Then I make an outline incorporating my notes. Once I have an outline, I start writing -- the hardest part is usually to get the opening sentence down on paper.

Most of the prompts I pick up have characters and situations specified (e.g. from a kink meme), so all I have to do is write it. If it's a little more vague, I usually have to think it on a bit, an outlines are helpful if it's really vague.
