How do you feel about posting works in progress? Have you ever done it? How did that work out?

This is on my mind right now because I'm on chapter 7 of a long story (I don't know how long it will end up being) and very much want to share what I've got. I'm just afraid to because I've got a post-as-I-go work that's still incomplete that I've been working on for fourteen or fifteen years and haven't updated in a year and a half (I'm currently stuck on it). I've told myself that I'm not going to do that to myself or to potential readers again, but oh, how I want to post!

I feel like I'm being buried in Real Life! Oh, for a day with nothing pressing, so I could dabble in my writing to my heart's content!

I am in the same boat as you -- it's so hard not to post when I have a new WIP I want to share, but I hesitate to start posting it because of those other WIPs that are getting new chapters like once a year (if that) and have been ongoing for 10-15 years. Not one of those slow-moving WIPS is abandoned but the readers probably feel like they are!

My own feeling is that, it's encouraging to me to get my work out there, and this is usually enough for me to go ahead and do it. When I do this, I try to have enough written ahead that I can post regularly but slowly and keep ahead of the WIP. From experience, however, there is the reality that I might let my readers down by slowing down too much in posting at some point, so these days I am trying to be more careful about starting in the first place. At present, my life is too busy for me to write anything at all, so I am holding off on my new WIP because I know it will get derailed like the other WIPs did!

It's been a long time since I've done anything with chapters, since I'm rubbish at finishing longer works, so ... I guess you could say I get a bit nervous about posting WIPs.

For me, I have to just push through that desire to post anything incomplete. I'm a slow writer and the stress will not be worth it.
