Discussion: outlines? Do you work from an outline? Is it vague? Is it detailed?

Today and tomorrow are all about doctor's appointments (actually, all of May is about doctor's appointments. I'm averaging two a week). I might, if I'm lucky, get to write some tomorrow afternoon, but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't like outlines. I tend to discover the story by writing it without quite knowing what's going to happen. I have some vague ideas for things that I might put in eventually, but often, by the time I get to them, they're wildly different from what I originally imagined.

In addition to several appointments, I had unexpected things that cropped up, which has made me feel like vegetating now instead of getting my brain to wrap itself around story ideas.

I love outlines. Mine are pretty detailed for my longer works; shorter works are less detailed but there's still enough there to help me form my train of thought as I write. My outlines are good hooks to hang my research on before I write -- once I start writing, I usually discover I need more research, and that's where I allow myself to get away from my outline. The outline helps me keep track of all the details I want to cover, but if I discover the story is moving away from the outline, I go with the story and scrap the outline -- but that doesn't happen very often!

I only wrote a few paragraphs today. Although I've been able to write down a little bit each day, I haven't had a really good writing session yet--it's a little discouraging. Trying to focus on the positive (something rather than nothing) instead of being frustrated at the slow progress and overall messiness.

I use outlines for chaptered fic, but not for one-shots. I do have a tendency to ramble over tangential stuff if I don't have an outline to refer to. ^^;

writing and outlines and betas and snippet question, oh my!

It's after 11 AM, and I'm still not quite awake yet, woke up at 7:30. My week has gone like this, always looking up to find I'm running way behind.

I am working on liking and doing outlines. I would love to be a good and prolific writer, as several of the writers I admire are, and a big part of that seems to be outlines. So far I haven't outlined much, or worked on what I've outlined, so I can't say if I'm improving or not.

I did write some yesterday and already this morning, without an outline, so that's a plus.

A few months back, I started looking for betas, since I seem to have lost all/most of mine, for various reasons. Got sidetracked with life, and am now going to look again. I'd like feedback and discussion of all kinds. I don't think I'm a horrible writer, but I always want to be better. I have had some bad experiences with betas not being honest with me and then finding out about it later, and that hurt very badly. Honesty is very important to me.

Also important to me is not looking foolish by making stupid mistakes - I can read what I have written several times, and still not notice stupid errors until after the story is posted. That's become an excuse for several years to not post anything at all, which is not good.

I center around The Equalizer (the show) as my main fandom with original characters, and a few other fandoms, and I write varied lengths. We used to do beta request days here on Fridays but I haven't kept up with my communities very well. .

By the way, for snippet days, how big is a snippet? Are they just for snippet days? Can I snippet here and cut (if I can do it properly), or link to my journal? My muse seems to be fixed on vignettes and prompts lately, and they might make good snippets.

Thank you and keep writing! :)
Have a good day.
Theresa
