Discussion: reading. When you're reading fic, do you read the same things that you write? Do you read something different?

I guess you could say I read the things I wish that I wrote. If I'm not reading a giftfic from one challenge or another, I'm going back and reading epic 'fics I have saved from back in the day (i.e. from the pre-FFN period, when fandoms had dedicated archives and epic-sized stories were much more common).

I read a lot of fandoms I don't write and will probably never write, and there are fandoms I've written but almost never read.

I think that, fandom aside, I write the sort of thing I want to read. Even when I'm writing a gift fic for someone, it still usually ends up being a version of what they asked for that fits what I like. Part of the challenge is finding the intersection of the two. The more information I have on my recipient, the better.
