Discussion: Canon. When you write fic do you stick to the canon or do you explore it?

I got some writing done today before I had to go out and do my night duty at work. I made a start on my summer mini challenge prompts with a one shot that I hope to finish tomorrow.

I like to stick to canon when I can and also explore it too, especially when things don't get handled well within the episode/movie/book.

I'm working on my hetbigbang project, but all I've had are false starts. It's frustrating. I can't continue work on a project unless it makes sense to me. I think it's because I tried the "write without editing" thing for NaNoWriMo years ago and it doesn't work for me at all, especially in the editing process. I'm working now on a new idea that's so far removed from my other ideas I had for hetbigbang, but it seems to be flowing? I think.

I tend to stick to canon and, in doing AUs, I mostly stick to canon-based AUs. If I do another AU, I want to do something I know and not a generic coffee shop or high school AU or whatever.

I'm mostly having a break. Some thinking I did for a fic turned out to be useless, as my idea will not work, so I have to rethink things.

I am very much a stick-to-canon person, so much of what I write are gapfillers. One of my main WIPs is an AU, however, which due to its AU-ness, is not exactly canon; however, even when I do change canon (like having characters be alive when they die in canon) everything else I write is canon-based -- the goal being to see how canon is affected when certain characters are inserted back into the timeline.
