Discussion: reading. When you're reading fic are there certain things (themes, styles, tropes etc) that you avoid? Do you read whatever is available within your fandom(s)?

I got some writing done after work because I had a very rare 2pm finish and the fic I've been working on for most of the day is almost finished, a few hundred words should be enough and I can also tick off one of the prompts on my Summer Mini Challenge table too.

I do read most things fic wise but I tend to give song fic and high school/coffee shop/pop star au's a miss because I'm not into those things. The majority of my fandoms are tiny so I can't always be so picky as to what I will read and often find myself writing something that I want to read anyway.

I normally post a 5, but I have recently been posting more 6s, and today is definitely a 7. :-) Met the deadline I mentioned, and I met it three days early. Not only that, but I met it with a story that I am particularly proud of creating, so ... yeah, it was a good day. I'm feeling so much better nowadays.

For today's question: To be honest, I don't read that much 'fic despite writing it. This is mostly because I'm the only active 'ficcer in so many of my fandoms, but it's also because I don't really look that hard. ^_^; I guess I'm more interested in creating than I am in consuming. That, and the kinds of really epic 'fics that I enjoyed reading back when I first got into fandom don't usually get written any more. But, every now and then, I stumble across something of interest, especially if it's a pairing I really like.

Mostly I avoid fandom "what if" scenarios and pregnancy fics.

As you can tell, I don't read anything available in the fandom.

I'm mostly just thinking about fic, though I managed a bit of brainstorming about some ideas for my new challenge piece.

I tend to read fics from fandoms I am not writing. When I read in my fandom, I tend to avoid themes that are similar to what I am working on, because I don't want to have my ideas spoiled or to be discouraged by someone who's a better writer! :-D I like reading AU's but they must be realistic; I dislike anything related to high school.
